20) "Broken Payphone"

I live in a medium-sized city in southern Ontario Canada.  I've noticed this payphone before as its almost next door to my favorite camera store, but this week is the first time I've photographed it. Its in a part of town popular with the university kids and has clearly suffered from their beer-induced abuse.

25) " Saturday morning at home with Margaret"

My favorite subject, and my best old camera. We have been in our little adobe in the desert north of Las Cruces, NM for ten years.  The house has a simple passive solar design which lets us heat it in the winter with a couple cords of pecan from the local orchards.  We met the people who built the house and first lived in it about thirty years ago.  They dug the dirt for the adobe bricks right on the property, and they peeled the logs for the ceiling vigas themselves.  We've added an enclosed patio to keep out the rattlers.

Zeiss Ikon Ikonta 520.  Compur-Rapid shutter, T,B,1-500.  Carl Zeiss Jenna Tessar 1:3.5, f=7cm.Tmax 400 in Tmax developer. Exposure f/5.6 at 1/50 sec.  The camera is no bigger than my 35mm folders, but it shoots 6x4.5 cm frames, 16 on a roll of 120. The Tessar is stunningly sharp, even opened up. The integrity of the camera's design and construction is superb.

26) " Highway 185, Mile Marker 22"

This used to be the main highway to Albuquerque, still a two-lane and not much traffic.  Not much water in the Rio Grande this time of year either.  The rail line goes along the base of the Selden Hills on the other side of the river, turns right just past Tonuco Mountain in the distance, and then heads north again toward Santa Fe through the Jornada del Muerto.  My driveway follows the treeline in the center to the house, about a third of a mile to the west.

27) " Waikiki Beach"

While waiting for the sun to clear the mountains to shine on Waikiki Beach. After two hours the sun was to far north to light the front of the hotels and beach and this is my shoot of the day with the Zeiss Volta.

29) " Big Tonka! "

London Ontario

I live in a new suburb of the city and there is a large project underway to reclaim more land. There are several of these large trucks and other heavy equipment working when the weather is cooperating. I won't miss all the mess I have to drive through every day going home!

31) " Twin Bridges Beach"

This is a shot of an area most folks around here call Twin Bridges Beach.  It's really a sand bar on one of the main rivers "where I live".  Water is a main feature here, for power generation, fish runs, and recreation.  It's a mountainous region, with high snow passes providing water via hundreds of tributaries.  Many people would associate a river like this one with my home area.

32) "Tree Hole Barn "

Honorable Mention Winner

"I thought this fit the contest title well, in a kind of an artsy schmartsy way.  I'm not an artist, though.  This is just my crack at it;  The lumber in this old barn was milled at least 50 years ago.  I'm sure of that.  I know the family that built it.  Looking through the window is a reminder of my area's greatest renewable source of product, clean air, and outright beauty.  Millions of acres of new and old growth forest.  When the lumber for this old barn was built into this structure the tree seen in the window did not exist.  Who knew this would become a window to the future.  The trees used to make this barn have now been replaced by new trees, which will have grown to a size some 50% larger than the former sapling in the window."

33) "River "

"Rivers and forests are the big thing here, where I live.  This river originates about 55 miles from my home town, and the location of this photo is about 10 miles from my house.  Way up stream it is nothing more than a creek (pronounced "krik" hereabouts) fed by the drainage from the mountain range that borders the region.  Later in the spring, the river will take on a light brown color as the snow melts in earnest, filling it with a silt laden torrent.  The forest is huge, and getting lost is a possibility that many have explored in the past.   Just follow a creek, and you'll end up in a river.  Maybe not this one,  there are others...."

Voigtlander Inos I, Skopar 10.5 cm f/4.5, dial-set Compur T, B, 1-250.   Simple lever operated unit focusing by scale, push-pull lens extension and stowage.  Red window advance, of course.  Takes 8 6x9 exposures on 120 film (with a longer frame than most 6x9, actually about 56x86 mm). This exposure on J&C Pro 100, f/11 @ 1/100, hand held.

36) "Pedevallei "

"I was fascinated by the diagonal lines of the roof of this old house, the telephone cables, the old style street pole and the white trace of a passing airliner in the cold blue sky. The square format is a joy to compose with and very refreshing. It helps to see things in a new light. The Rolleiflex was not cheap but certainly a good investment because it makes we want to shot more film again."

My Grandfather's Minolta SRT-101, circa 1968.  He used it for years and years, and I inherited it a few years ago.  The advance mechanism is starting to show its age, and you must be careful to work the lever all the way forward, or it will start overlapping images.  Other than that, it works 100%.Lens is a Hoya 70-150 f3.8 zoom.  I purchased it new, but I can't remember exactly when.  It's probably pushing the '1970' date a little...but only by a few years.  The design is certainly pre-1970, and its a strongly-built tank of a lens that goes well with the SRT.

38) "Frankfurt "

This a view of Frankfurt, Germany, the city where I live. The picture was taken on a cold and windy afternoon February, 20th, while out shooting a roll for this contest. It shows some of the bank skyscrapers of Frankfurt's skyline seen from a bridge across the river Main.

Balda Mess-Baldix (aka Rangefinder Baldix) with an Enna Ennagon 7.5cm f/3.5 lens on Kodak Tri-X 400. Aperture was between 5.6 and 8, shutter speed was 1/50th second, and the camera was hand-held. I used an old Ceneiplan green-yellow filter on the lens. Focus was at infinity. The film was developed in a local S/W pro lab, so I can't give you any details on film developing. The Mess-Baldix is a fine 6x6 folder camera with an uncoupled rangefinder, double exposure prevention and film counter. It was only manufactured in 1954 by the Balda Werke in Bünde. A trimmed-down, rebranded version was sold as Hapo 66-E by the retailer Photo-Porst from 1955 on. The Ennagon by the Enna Werk München is a three-element lens that is capable of very sharp photos even when not stopped down to aperture 11 or 16. All in all a very nice classic camera my friend bought for only 26 Euro.
