First I would like to thank every one for coming to my retirement and to all the participants a Bravo Zulu for a job well done. A special thank you to Chief Delacruz for being my MC along with a Mahalo to his daughter Johanna for the singing of the national anthem. Eric I can say Eric thank you. I started on this speech many times in my head trying to figure how I was going to sum up my NAVY Career…. Do I make it serious ….Do I make it Humorous …Do I make it Patriotic… I joined the Navy at the age of 26 much older than most recruits. I was looking for a little direction, training in a new job field and to get my … as they say shit together. I have to say to my mother … I’m sorry…. I remember telling her 23 years ago not to worry that it’s like going off to collage and I’ll be back in 6 years…. I’m sure she will agree with me that it was time well spent. My wife … Joy … I met her in the San Francisco area 6 months after joining the Navy and we have been together ever sense. She has the hardest of the Navy Jobs, as I get to travel around the globe seeing new places she was stuck at home.. As she says. She is the one who kept my uniforms looking sharp and would remind me when it was time to cut my hair. Much of my squared away look .. I owe to her and I thank her for her LOVE and friendship. To my Brothers, Sisters and Nephews I have missed a lot of birthdays and other important dates but these last few days has shown me that we can pick up right were we left off and just being in your company is comforting. I’m gratefully that you took the time and the expense to make it here. One person I need to recognize is Mr. Ed Dubey I met Ed in 1991 when he came to do an Inspection on my equipment when I was stationed on the USS Leftwich I was a 1st class with than DS2 Eric Labaczewski…For weeks up to the inspection Eric and I fixed, repaired and aligned all of our equipment after a week of the inspection Ed could only find 2 minor problems on all our equipment. This last week Ed has been involved on another ship with out me and either he has gotten much better at finding problems or Eric and I were just … Good. Ed has taught me a lot of different ways to find and fix difficult problems on the ships. I have worked hand in hand with him for over 7 of the last 10 years. We sometimes look like a surgical team with one of us in the equipment and the other handing the other the tools. Other times like a husband and wife arguing in loud voices but never mad at each other. But at the end of the day we fixed an awful a lot of broken equipment …. With Ed around my motto was if we can’t fix it you need a new one… and so far nothing has been purchased….. I hope to work with you again. As we go through life we pick-up little sayings or words of wisdom to keep us going, at times they may sound trite and other times they pull all into prospective. When you first hear or read them you don’t know how they will affect you. A few that kept me going and maybe influenced me. I remember seeing this on a bulletin board at school right after seeing then President Kennedy in person in Germany in 1962. "Ask not what your country can do for you--ask what you can do for your country" from his Inaugural Address My work ethic. "Look around and see what needs to be done, and do it." ADM William "Bull" Halsey The state of the world Philosopher Edmund Burke said: "The only thing necessary for evil to flourish is for good men to do nothing." A few things to ponder….. Of course every one asks where you going …. what are you going to do …. You would think after 23 years that would be easy, but I like to procrastinate to the last and have put off making any decision. I had been planning on working in Hawaii with the than FTSCPAC but after the merge with the Shipyard my position was … downsized for a better word and decided to take a little time here and rethink my options and will be in the area for the next year. Photographer, Handyman, Electronic Technician, Camera Repair, Web Builder, World Traveler, Jack-of-All Trades Master of a Few if you need one of these let me know. As one of the new sayings you hear – BEEN THERE …– DONE THAT ….AND GOT THE T-SHIRT
THANK YOU
